There’s a lot going on of importance to independent pharmacies, so I’m combining two topics into one blog post. Hold onto your hats!

Pedigree Tracing Starts May 1

The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DCSA) became law in November 2013 and will be phased in over a 10-year period. Because there may be some misunderstanding of the three 2015 phase-ins, I will review them here. But, before I begin, allow me to assure you of this.

All distributors on TRxADE have provided their compliance information. TRxADE will not allow distributors to participate if they are found to be out of compliance.

Beginning January 1, 2015

  1. Wholesale distributors required to report licensure and other information to FDA
  2. Confirm authorized trading partners (manufacturers, repackagers, wholesale distributors, dispensers, and third-party logistics providers).*
  3.  All supply chain parties, including pharmacies, must have systems for handling “suspect” or “illegitimate” products

*The manufacturer is required to confirm that all distributors are properly authorized. If you are concerned that any distributor may not be authorized, check with your state authority to confirm licensure.

Beginning May 1, 2015

In December 2014, FDA delayed some of the requirements for manufacturers, repackagers, and wholesale distributors that were originally scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2015 until May 1, 2015. This is information independent pharmacies should start receiving from distributors no later than May 1.

  1. Transaction information
  2. Transaction history
  3. Transaction statement

Starting May 1, make sure you are receiving this information from your distributors.

Beginning July 1, 2015

Beginning July 1, 2015, pharmacies (and all other dispensers) are required to store the lot-level product tracing (transaction information, history, and statement) for six years from receipt.

Supplements, Thermometers, and Bandages, Oh My!

Medical supplies and equipment can be major sources of revenue and profit for independent pharmacies. Now, you can buy them wholesale on TRxADE.

Right now you’ll find a wide array of non-prescription pharmacy products ranging from bandages to supplements to thermometers and more from suppliers you already know and trust, including Quest Pharmaceuticals, River City Pharmaceutical Distribution, and Top Rx, Inc.

While a system for searching non-drug items separately is still on the drawing board, you can perform simple searches of specific medical supplies, equipment, and supplements by entering the generic category, such as “bandage” in the search field.

Simply, click Purchase Products, and enter the generic product type in the Product Name field. Then click Search.

When your search result displays, click the distributors name to see all relevant products in that category offered by the distributor.

When You See a Special Offer

You’ve surely noticed the special offers that sometimes appear on the TRxADE marketplace right after you login. These are very special deals for products a distributor wants to move in a hurry.
